Legal tender status of euro cash: merchants call for reasonable exemptions from mandatory acceptance
Today in Europe, merchants continue to accept payments in cash despite a consistent decrease in its use. The Commission proposal to impose mandatory acceptance of euro cash is therefore unnecessary and poses great difficulties in many real-life use cases. As a group of European organisations representing millions of merchants across Europe, we jointly call on EU policy-makers to include a pragmatic list of exemptions to the ‘mandatory acceptance’ principle.
