The European Commission's former Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry (DG ENTR) was responsible for all industrial sectors. All services on the other hand, like tourism and retail, used to fall under the auspices Directorate-General for Internal Market and Services (DG MARKT). Now, those directorates general were merged into the Directorate-General (DG) for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs. DG GROW - headed by Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska - is committed to establish a favourable environment for all small and medium enterprises, including those in the retail sector.
At the European Parliament, these areas are covered by the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), which is chaired by MEP Jerzi Buzek, and the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO), which is chaired by MEP Anneleen van Bossuyt. Certain aspects of internal market work are covered by other Parliamentary committees depending on the subject in question, such as the Committee for Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON), headed by MEP Roberto Gualtieri.
